This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
